How to use transparent PNGs in PowerPoint and Google Slides
Step-by-step instructions for inserting, layering, recolouring and adding shadows to transparent PNG images in Microsoft PowerPoint and Google Slides, with fixes for common issues.

Presentations are where transparent images earn their keep. A logo that sits cleanly on a coloured title slide, an icon beside each bullet point, or a cut-out product on a gradient instantly makes a deck look more polished than a white rectangle pasted on top of the design.
Both Microsoft PowerPoint and Google Slides fully support PNG transparency. This guide shows how to insert and style transparent PNGs in each, and how to fix the problems that come up most often.
Before you start: pick the right file
A few seconds of checking saves a lot of frustration later:
- Make sure the file ends in .png. JPG files cannot be transparent.
- Check the dimensions. A standard 16:9 slide is often shown at 1920 × 1080 pixels on modern screens. An image that will fill half the slide should be at least about 1000 pixels wide to stay sharp.
- Look at the preview on a checkerboard. If the checkerboard looks blurry or seems to be "inside" the picture, it may be a fake. Our guide to what a transparent PNG is explains how to tell.
Using transparent PNGs in PowerPoint
Insert the image
- Go to Insert, then Pictures, then This Device (on Mac: Picture from File).
- Select your PNG and click Insert.
You can also drag the PNG from your file explorer straight onto a slide. The transparent areas will show the slide background, just as you would expect.
Position and layer it
- Drag corner handles to resize without distorting the image. Hold Shift to be extra safe.
- Right-click the image and use Bring to Front or Send to Back to control whether it sits above or below text boxes and shapes.
- The Selection Pane (under Home, Arrange, or Picture Format) lists every object on the slide, which is very handy when a transparent image is hiding behind something.
Add a shadow or glow
Select the image, open Picture Format, then Picture Effects. Here you will find:
- Shadow: An outer shadow follows the shape of the object itself, not a rectangle, because PowerPoint respects the PNG's transparency. A soft "Offset: Bottom" shadow works well for product shots.
- Glow and Soft Edges: Useful for icons on dark backgrounds.
Recolour it to match your theme
Under Picture Format, Color, you can apply a Recolor preset that tints the whole image in one of your theme colours. This is a quick way to make icons and silhouettes match your brand. Only the visible pixels change; the transparent areas stay transparent.
Remove a background from an image that is not transparent
If you only have a JPG with a plain background, PowerPoint offers two built-in tools under Picture Format:
- Remove Background automatically detects the main subject and lets you mark areas to keep or remove.
- Color, then Set Transparent Color, makes every pixel of one exact colour transparent. It works for simple graphics on a pure white background, but leaves rough edges on photos.
Both work, but a properly cut-out PNG almost always looks cleaner than a background removed inside a slide tool.
Using transparent PNGs in Google Slides
Insert the image
- Click Insert, then Image, then Upload from computer.
- Choose your PNG.
Alternatively, drag the file from your computer into the browser window, or use Insert, Image, By URL if you have a direct link to the image file.
Position and layer it
- Resize with the corner handles. Holding Shift keeps proportions.
- Use Arrange, then Order, to bring the image forward or send it backward.
- Arrange, then Align, lines the image up with the slide or with other selected objects.
Add a drop shadow and adjust it
Select the image and open Format options. There you can:
- Add a Drop shadow and adjust its colour, transparency, angle, distance and blur. Like PowerPoint, Google Slides draws the shadow around the visible shape, not the bounding box.
- Use Adjustments to change transparency, brightness and contrast.
- Use Recolor to tint the image with a preset colour.
Removing backgrounds
Google Slides does not include a built-in background remover. If your image has a solid background, it is easiest to find a version that is already a transparent PNG.
Design tips for slides
- Use one style of icon per deck. Mixing flat, 3D and line icons looks messy. Line icons like a bus line icon work well for clean, corporate decks.
- Give cut-outs room to breathe. A transparent object with plenty of empty space around it looks more premium than one squeezed into a corner.
- Ground your objects. A soft shadow or a simple coloured shape behind a cut-out stops it from looking as if it is floating.
- Check on the projector or a dark theme. Halos around cut-outs that are invisible on white become obvious on dark backgrounds.
- Keep file size in mind. Dozens of very large PNGs can make a deck slow to open and share. PowerPoint's Compress Pictures option (under Picture Format) reduces the resolution of images that are larger than they need to be.
Common problems and fixes
The image has a white box around it
The file is not transparent. Check that it is a real PNG and test it on a dark slide. If the box is still there, download a different version.
The image looks blurry when presenting
It was enlarged beyond its original resolution. Replace it with a larger version. In PowerPoint, also check File, Options, Advanced, Image Size and Quality to make sure images are not being compressed heavily when you save.
Transparency disappears after exporting
Exporting slides as JPG will always fill transparent areas with the slide background, which is expected. If you need a single object with transparency, right-click it in PowerPoint and choose Save as Picture, then pick PNG.
Summary
Both PowerPoint and Google Slides handle transparent PNGs well. Insert the file, layer it with the arrange tools, and use shadows, recolouring and alignment to make it fit your design. Start with a clean, high-resolution cut-out and you will rarely need any background-removal tools at all.
